– Leptospira is an infectious bacterial disease occurring in rodents, dogs, and other mammals, which can be transmitted to humans.
– The early signs of Leptospira includes High fever, Headache, Chills, Muscle aches, Vomiting, Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), Red eyes, Abdominal pain
– Leptospirosis is spread mainly by contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals. Persons can get the disease by swimming or wading in fresh unchlorinated water contaminated with animal urine or by coming into contact with wet soil or plants contaminated with animal urine.
– The disease often causes serious damage to the kidney and liver, and may be fatal in severe cases. Bacteria are passed in the urine of infected animals and can survive in the environment for long periods of time in warm stagnant water or moist soil.
– The signs and symptoms of leptospirosis usually appear suddenly, about 5 to 14 days after infection, but the incubation period can range from 2 to 30 days.
– Leptospirosis is treated with antibiotics, such as doxycycline or penicillin, which should be given early in the course of the disease. Intravenous antibiotics may be required for persons with more severe symptoms.
