Frequently Asked Questions
What are the signs and symptoms of a UTI?
The most common UTI symptoms are:
- Pain or painful urination
- Frequent need to urinate
- Burning sensation while urinating
- Bladder spasm
- Lower back pain
- Fever
If you experience any of these symptoms, immediately consult your physician. Learn more about common UTI symptoms and about diagnosing a UTI.
What does a positive result mean?
When used properly, the AZO®Test Strips home UTI test can detect that you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). AZO®Test Strips test for both leukocytes (white blood cells or WBC’s) and nitrite. These tests performed together are more effective for detecting a UTI than testing for nitrite alone.
Will common foods, alcohol, or medications affect my test results?
Most substances will not interfere with the test. However, some medications can affect the color of your urine, making it difficult to properly match the colors. For example, if you take more than 500 mg of Vitamin C in 24 hours, you may obtain a false negative nitrite result. The drug tetracycline may also cause a false negative WBC result. If you are having difficulty reading the test strip or getting a negative result while experiencing UTI symptoms, contact your healthcare professional immediately.
How do I interpret the results?
Use the following table to determine what your test results mean. Remember, they are only one piece of information your doctor needs in order to treat you. RESULTS Recommendations Leukocytes (LEU) Nitrite (NIT) Negative Negative Results suggest no sign of a UTI. When trace LEU occurs or if you have symptoms, test again the following day with your first morning urine using a new test strip. If you get another trace LEU or if you still have symptoms, consult your physician. Negative or trace Positive Results suggest a sign of a UTI. Consult your physician immediately. Positive Positive Results suggest a sign of a UTI. Consult your physician immediately. Positive Negative Results suggest a sign of a UTI. Repeat the test next time you urinate using a new test strip. Make sure to wash the genital area first. If LEU is still positive, consult your physician.
Why is morning urine the best for testing?
Bacteria require time to convert nitrates to nitrites. Testing in the morning, assuming you have slept for at least four hours without urinating, allows the bacteria sufficient time to complete the conversion and provide a rich sample for testing.
Can I use AZO Test Strips during my menstrual cycle?
This is not recommended because traces of menses can produce a false positive WBC (Leukocyte) result.
Do AZO Test Strips detect STDs, HIV, Cancer, Protein, Yeast or sugar in the urine?
AZO Test Strips will not identify anything other than the presence of WBCs (Leukocytes) and nitrites in the urine.
